  • Kathy Silenga - Chairperson

    Kathy Silenga has an honours degree in Zoology from the University of Edinburgh and almost 20 years’ experience working in the conservation sector. This includes five years in Zambia where she led volunteers conducting wildlife population surveys in national parks, was manager of a wildlife sanctuary and worked with James Florence to set up the Elephant Orphanage Project in Kafue National Park. She spent four years in Ghana as Country Coordinator for West African Primate Conservation Action, managing in-situ and field based conservation programmes. She then worked on UK & International Projects for UK-based charity, Trees for Cities, where her responsibilities include fundraising, partnership working, project development and delivery. She is currently Head of Development for youth charity, BIGKID Foundation, with responsibility for fundraising, communications, monitoring and evaluation.

  • Susie Bertos - Secretary

    Susie has over 7 years’ experience advising on planning and environmental issues in various city law firms. She previously worked as a volunteer on conservation projects abroad including wildlife surveys in the Kafue National Park in Zambia, marine surveys off the north coast of Borneo and most recently researching India's law on waste; in particular plastic. After several years of travelling around Asia she has returned to London and continues to advise on local planning issues.

  • Chris Eccles - Treasurer

    Chris setup an online recruitment business in 2000, while studying Economics & Politics at Exeter University, which he continues to run to this day. His passion for wildlife and travel have taken him to 5 of the world's continents, including voluntary work on a conservation project in Africa. Chris brings expertise from establishing and growing a commercial business to the board, along with a strong desire to have a positive impact on wildlife across the globe.

  • Mike Shackshaft - Trustee

    A love of conservation and birds took Michael to Zambia in 2004 where he was lucky enough to gain valuable voluntary experience working on a conservation project providing ecological information for the Zambian Wildlife Authority. After studying migratory birds and endemic beetle species at university, Michael spent 9 years working for the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust (WWT) working in an advisory role that included aerial surveys for seabirds, development of spatial decision making tools, habitat creation advice and design and constructed wetland development. Michael is currently employed as a consultant ornithologist, managing the ornithological element of environmental assessments for large scale developments and providing advice relating to ornithology. Michael brings experience of project management and development to the team and valuable experience of working in the conservation sector.

  • Bea Lopez - Trustee

    Bea is a committed conservationist, with a passion for wildlife and the promotion of sustainable animal welfare practices.

    Having earned her degree in Animal Biology from Santiago de Compostela University (Spain), Bea completed her post-graduate research in the Brazilian rainforest, focusing on primate behaviour.

    Motivated by the concept of community engagement in conservation efforts, she worked in the US coordinating a wetland conservation programme across 13 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, operating at NGO level.

    As an accomplished project manager, Bea spent a few years overseeing seabird and marine mammal surveys in addition to managing a variety of wetland conservation initiatives, both in the UK and internationally.

    Currently serving as a Senior Manager at a non-departmental public body, Bea plays a key role in championing the use of high-quality research to influence policy decisions.

  • Dr Sam Long - Trustee

    Sam graduated from Melbourne University before undergoing his residency and specialist training in Glasgow in the UK. Following his specialist training he undertook a PhD in canine brain cancer before moving to the United States to take up a position as head of the Section of Neurology at the University of Pennsylvania’s Veterinary Hospital. In 2008 Sam returned to Melbourne to establish the University of Melbourne Veterinary Hospital’s first ever Neurology clinical service and specialist training programme.

    Sam left the University in 2017 to join CARE and establish Melbourne’s first private referral neurology service and in 2020 moved to Veterinary Referral Hospital in Dandenong, Australia, also providing neurology referral services.
