Herb: Sorrel French (organic)

£1.49

French Sorrel seeds (Rumex acetosa). Organic herb seeds from Tamar Organics.

Traditional large leaved type for sauces, soups etc.

It is a bit of a cross between a vegetable and a herb. It is a perennial plant and the lance shaped leaves appear very early in the spring. They have a sharp lemon like flavour which is very refreshing and also good levels of vitamin A and C. This makes them very nutritionally valuable after winter’s shortage of green leaves. The stem is tall, rigid with a reddish tinge. The small greenish flowers quickly produce a mass of seeds which turn red and look quite similar to rhubarb, docks and buckwheat to which they are related. It is high in oxalic acid so be aware of this if you have a sensitivity.

  • Sow seeds from March until June directly into the growing site. Sorrel likes acid soil in sun or light shade.

  • Thin the seedlings as they grow to a distance of 15 cm apart. Harvest single leaves when large enough and cut off the flowering stalks to encourage more leaf growth.

  • 800 seeds

  • Tamar Organics are on a mission to encourage people to grow at least some of their own food and to do it organically.

Organic growing helps to protect the environment, improves soil and encourages biodiversity. Using organic seeds means that you are supporting organic farmers and acres and acres of land under organic management.

Tamar Organics started as a small organic market garden in 1994. They have been registered as producers with the soil association since that time. They added their processor license in 2000 when they became one of the first UK companies to offer organic seeds.

They are inspected every year by the Soil Association, and the plant health seed inspectorate. They participate in the GMO audit. They do not support the development of genetically modified seeds and none of Their seeds are GMs.
